Seventh grade students recently attended the New York Historical Society's Children's History Book Prize event. Author Ellen Klages spoke about her book Out of Left Field, which tells the story of Katy Gordon, a talented athlete living in San Francisco in 1957. Determined to prove that women can and should play baseball, Katy embarks on a research quest to find other women who played the sport and fight the Little League’s verdict. Students also heard from Maria Pepe, a little girl from Hoboken who, in 1972, fought the National Little League organization to include girls - and won! Today over 2 million girls nationwide participate in Little League.

The New York Historical Society hosts a free family book club. All are welcome to attend. Check out their website at
